Vespel® is a high-performance polyimide from DuPont known for its excellent mechanical strength, wear resistance, and high-temperature resistance. It is often used in applications where metals or other plastics fail
What is Vespel® used for?
Vespel® is used in sectors such as:
- Aerospace (bearings, seals, insulation)
- Automotive (valve guides, sealing rings)
- Semiconductor industry (insulation parts, precision components)
- Industrial machinery (sliding bearings, friction parts)
What are the benefits of Vespel®?
- Resistant to temperatures up to 300°C continuously and peaks up to 480°C
- High wear resistance and low friction (even without lubricant)
- High mechanical strength at both low and high temperatures
- Excellent chemical resistance
- Good dimensional stability
What types of Vespel® are there?
Some commonly used grades are:
- SP-1: Pure polyimide, best for electrical/thermal insulation
- SP-21: With 15% graphite, improved wear resistance
- SP-22: With 40% graphite, very low friction
- SP-3: With 15% MoS2 (molybdenum disulfide), ideal for vacuum applications
- SP-211: Combination of graphite and PTFE, for excellent friction and wear properties
How does Vespel® compare to metals or other plastics?
- Compared to metals: lighter, maintenance-free, better performance without lubrication
- Compared to standard plastics: much better temperature and wear resistance, but higher cost
What are the limitations?
- Relatively expensive material compared to conventional plastics
- Not suitable for strong acids or bases
- May become brittle under very high loads without support
How is Vespel® delivered?
- As rods, plates, or tubes for machining (CNC turning/milling)
- As custom parts, fully machined to size
Can Vespel® be glued or welded?
No, Vespel® cannot be welded. Mechanical fasteners or heat-resistant adhesives are typically used for fastening.
Is Vespel® electrically insulating?
Yes, especially the pure SP-1 is excellent as an electrical and thermal insulator, even at high temperatures.
Is Vespel® available from Inno-Plast?
Yes, Inno-Plast can supply CNC milled and turned parts in Vespel®, completely customized to the customer's requirements.
